Design Approach
Design at its most enduring and elevating is a balance of technological and artistic sensibilities. FTL/Happold performs engineering design by exploring engineering solutions and advancing current state-of-the-art technology. Moreover, at FTL/Happold we believe that quality in design is best achieved through an integrated approach, where the engineer is an integral part of the design team from concept to realization of projects.

Organization
FTL/Happold in New York is the North American base of operations for Buro Happold, a large, international, multidisciplinary consulting engineering practice with offices in United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. We are known worldwide for high quality engineering design both at the conceptual stage and in the details.

Stressed Structure Expertise
Through years of experience we have developed an expertise in the engineering of lightweight structural systems, an ever-broadening technology which roughly encompasses a group of compressive and tensile surface structures made from such materials as woven textiles, steel cables, glass, plastics, and concrete.

In order to understand the complexity of three-dimensional curved forms, we use special physical and computer modeling techniques. Our proprietary in-house computer software system, "Tensyl Suite", allows for efficient realization of complicated three-dimensional forms through form generation, analysis, fabrication detailing, patterning and graphics. Our approach features an interaction of sketching, physical and computer modeling, and engineering analysis, essential to multi-dimensional problem solving.

Services
Our primary services include feasibility studies, structural analysis, engineering design, detailing, and construction documentation. We work in a variety of ways with architects, engineers, contractors and fabricators. We can provide reaction loads imparted from special structures to their supporting structures and foundations, and provide stretch-compensated computer generated fabric cutting patterns and cable lengths for use in manufacturers' shops.
The NY design principals of FTL are: Todd Dalland, AIA and Nick Goldsmith, AIA
